Mold contamination is the presence of mold growth and/or mold spores, whose identity, location, and quantity are not reflective of normal fungal ecology for similar indoor environments.  Mold contamination can produce adverse health effects, cause damage to materials and/or adversely affect the operation or function of building systems.

Mold is that four letter word that nobody likes. Mold requires a combination of four main ingredients to grow – oxygen, water, nutrients and temperature. Nutrients for mold growth can be a variety of material, such as paper, wood, or fabrics. In addition, mold has ways of finding nutrients from various synthetic products like adhesives and paints. Moisture is one of the key factors that aids mold growth. Certain mold species feed off the moisture in the air when the relative humidity is elevated. Different types of mold reproduce at normal temperatures indoors. Minimal types of mold are able to grow below 40 F or above 100 F. Mold found outside this temperature range may remain dormant or non-active, but have the possibility of growing again when the temperature permits.
